The Story Behind The Song: MUST DIE! – Project Ghost

Copped MUST DIE!’s debut album Death & Magic yet?

If not, Project Ghost is a great place to start. It’s actually where MUST DIE! started the album himself…

A consummate example of the linear, stripped back minimalism he identified last time we spoke, what ignites with widescreen, dramatic epicity quickly switches into a brutal bass exercise that pulverises with fantastic elasticity. One of 10 ace tracks on the album, we collared the American-in-Berlin to find out a little more about it…

Will I recycle things I cut from the album? Probably not. I waste everything all the time! I like making new things…. And I’m already looking forward to making the next album.

“Project Ghost actually sparked the whole album! Now the album is so much different to what I originally had in mind, but the whole thing was originally a concept record. It was originally going to be called Star Throne. And Star Throne, Project Ghost and Feathers are the only remnants from that build of the record.

The whole concept was basically about the fall the magic and the rise of machines. Over time and talking and thinking, the whole thing shifted to Death & Magic. But originally it was all about how humans would rely on magic but now they rely on machines. It was a throwback to several of the Final Fantasies and the movie Wizards.

The whole change from the concept to the album I finally released last week was a very gradual process. I knew it would have to change quite early on, though… My scope and capacity to work at that stage of my life wasn’t conducive to such a detailed, immense project. So I knew I was going to have to simplify it to something a bit like a normal person’s album. But Project Ghost is definitely one track that still has all the foundations of the original concept.

It’s still very cinematic, but it was much more cinematic to begin with; a whole crazy intro was cut from it… It sounded like a machine starting up! We cut it because it was too much for the rest of the album. Will I recycle things I cut from the album? Probably not. I waste everything all the time! I like making new things…. And I’m already looking forward to making the next album.”
